Amna Nurhusein is an Eritrean politician and member of the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice, the country’s only legal political party.
She served as Eritrea’s minister of tourism from 2001 to 2009 and has been the minister of health since 2009.
In her role as health minister, she has emphasized public awareness and community involvement to reduce maternal and child mortality rates and combat communicable diseases.
Her tenure has faced challenges, including the government’s controversial 2019 seizure of Catholic-run health facilities, which drew criticism from Eritrea’s Catholic bishops in a letter addressed to her.
Nurhusein’s political career reflects her long-standing involvement in Eritrea’s governance under president Isaias Afwerki.
He has also served as an Eritrean secretary of social affairs and chair of Eritrea’s Social Service Authority.
