Kenya says plans to upgrade Nakuru cancer centre to referral hub

Kenya’s health cabinet secretary Aden Duale has announced plans to upgrade the Nakuru County Regional Cancer Centre to a referral hub serving 24 counties in a bid to expand access to cancer treatment, the ministry of health said on Wednesday, July 23.

The upgrade will be implemented through the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP) and deliver advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment to facilities across Nakuru county, the ministry said.

It cited Duale as reaffirming strict pharmaceutical regulation, stating that only government-authorised professionals may dispense medication to ensure drug quality and patient safety nationwide.

The Nakuru county government said earlier this month that the cancer attends to over 50 cancer patients daily.

The centre has a brachytherapy unit for the treatment of cervical, prostate, and other types of cancer, it said.

The county government opened a multimillion-shilling regional cancer treatment centre at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital in 2022.
